Updated: Feb 15, 2022

The National Economics Olympiad (NEO), one of AEclipse’s flagship events, is less than a month away. On March 4th we invite you to show your problem-solving skills to compete for a winning prize of €300 and a total prize pool of €600. As the sign-up deadline is approaching (20 February), we wanted to take the opportunity to familiarize you with NEO and what you can expect from it.

This year’s National Economics Olympiad consists of 10 questions, sent in by professors all across the country, focusing on various branches of economics. Generally, those are master-level question that require students to work together in teams, for which you will be given 3 hours. The competition is open to students all across the Netherlands, thus last year’s NEO attracted students from universities all across the Netherlands, such as the University of Amsterdam, Utrecht University and Maastricht University. This is not only a great opportunity to test your general knowledge and skills in the different branches of economics, but also a unique chance to enhance your problem-solving skills.

Furthermore, we are happy to announce that this year’s participants will have the possibility to join the event on campus again (depending on the regulations), however, the option to participate online via zoom is still available. Besides the competition, you will have the opportunity to join two workshops (on campus only), as well as a lecture from Professor Kurt Richard Brekke, a renowned expert in the area of pharmaceutical markets, on “The Economics of COVID-19”. The keynote lecture will take place on campus, but also live streamed, hence you have to option to join in online as well. The first workshop will be hosted by RBB Economics, a consultancy firm specialized on competition law matters, such as merger, monopoly inquiries cartel and other areas of applied microeconomics. The second workshop is still to be confirmed, more information will follow soon.

While the workshops will only be available for students signing up for the National Economics Olympiad, the keynote lecture by Prof. Kurt Richard Brekke, scheduled from 15:30-16:30 will be available for everyone.
