Een paar weken geleden was alweer de Halfjaarlijkse Algemene Ledenvergadering. Dat betekent dat we ondertussen alweer op de helft van dit mooie jaar zijn. Er is al veel moois gebeurd, maar ook is er veel moois dat er nog aan komt. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan het feest ter ere van ons 12,5-jarig bestaan, de Algemeen Economen Dag en de voetbalwedstrijd tussen studenten en docenten.

De maanden januari en februari zijn voor mij persoonlijk heel erg zwaar, maar vooral ook heel erg gaaf geweest met als onbetwist hoogtepunt de reis naar New York en Washington. Maar ook de inhousedagen en het afsluitende Symposium waren een groot succes. Over deze vier mooie evenementen zal dan ook een kort verslag te vinden zijn verder op in deze pApErclipse.

De TWICS, al maanden lang zingt deze naam rond op H8-30. Deze nieuw opgerichte commissie is namelijk al een tijdje bezig met de organisatie van het feest van het jaar! In deze editie kan je lezen wat ze voor je in petto hebben.

Ik hoop u alleen tegen te komen op 5 maart 2009 om het 12,5-jarig bestaan met ons mee te vieren en ik wens u veel leesplezier met deze 3^e editie van de pApErclipse.

Op 23 augustus 1996 werd AEclipse opgericht. Dat was afgelopen maandag 23 februari dus precies 12,5jaar geleden. En dat is reden voor een feestje! Onder de werknaam Twics begon een kleine commissie een paar maanden geleden met de voorbereiding. Op donderdag 5 maart is dan ook het feest geweest met de band Pangea en aansluitend DJ Martininio is het dak eraf gegaan en is er tot in de vroege uurtjes doorgefeest.

Al vroeg hadden de BCT deelnemers afgesproken in Rotterdam om met de trein naar de inhousedag te gaan van het ministerie van financiën. Het programma voor die dag was namelijk als volgt: tussen 9.00 en 12.00 uur een presentatie en een case maken in het teken van internationale onderhandelingen. Daarna een lunch met de medewerkers van het ministerie.

Na het ontvangst hebben we een interessante presentatie van wat de taken van het ministerie van financiën zijn en een uitleg over de case van de afdeling Bfb. Hierna werd de groep verdeeld in vier groepen en gingen die ieder aan de slag met de case. Uiteindelijk was er een presentatie van elke groep over hun bevindingen en een lekkere en nuttige lunch. Een zeer geslaagde ochtend dus!

Op een regenachtige donderdagochtend hadden de deelnemers zich verzameld bij het centraal station van Rotterdam om met zijn allen naar Optiver te gaan in Amsterdam. Optiver is een onderneming die handelt in financiële derivaten. Na eerst een presentatie te hebben gehad van verschillende medewerkers over het bedrijf Optiver en hun functie werd er een ‘bidding game’ gespeeld. De groep werd verdeeld in kleine groepjes en het groepje met de meeste winst in het spel kon hier dan ook een prijs krijgen. De winnaar was uiteindelijk het groepje met André, Wandana en Andjenie, zij hadden met het spel de meeste winst. Na het spel werd er nog een gezellige borrel gehouden met verschillende medewerkers van Optiver. Na deze borrel ging iedereen weer terug in de regen met de trein naar huis.

Op donderdag 12 februari vond het symposium ‘Praktijk en Beleid’ plaats in de universiteit. De toon voor deze middag werd gezet door drs. J. Delfgaauw. In een uitgebreid betoog werden de aangekondigde stimuleringsuitgaven van de laatste tijd ter discussie gesteld.

BMC, een adviesbedrijf voor overheidsinstanties, vervolgde daarna met een presentatie het symposium. Omdat BMC voor een groot deel afhankelijk is van overheidsuitgaven, waren ze het duidelijk niet eens met de eerdere spreker. Dit leidde al meteen tot een boeiende discussie bij de aanwezigen. De presentatie ging over de expertise van BMC op het gebied van advisering, en als afsluiting werd de BMC crisisscan, ‘de scan om gemeentes recessieproof te maken’, besproken. Na een korte onderbreking, nam BOFEB het stokje over. BOFEB is een stichting die een 1 jarige cursus aanbiedt na het afstuderen. Dit met als doel studenten klaar te stomen voor een baan op 1 van de ministeries. Zij gaven een korte informele presentatie, waarbij vooral thema’s besproken werden die op dit moment centraal staan bij beleidsadviezen. Na het serieuze gedeelte, konden de deelnemers individueel verder praten met BOFEB in Sienna onder het genot van een drankje. In het licht van onze eerdere georganiseerde inhousedagen, is dit al met al een leerzame en zeer geslaagde donderdagmiddag geweest.

Dear members,

 A few weeks ago it was already time for the Half Year Annual Members Meeting. This means that we’re at the half of this wonderful year. A lot of good things have happened, but also there are a lot of good things still to come. For example think at the AEclipse Party to celebrate our 12,5^th anniversary, the Algemeen Economen Dag and the soccer match between students and teachers.

For me personally the months January and February have been very tough, but also fantastic with the trip to New York and Washington as the main highlight. But also the in-house days and the symposium were a great success. In this pApErclipse you can read a short impression of these activities.

The TWICS, for months this name has been mentioned a lot at H8-30. This newly founded committee has been busy for a while with the organization of the party of the year! In this edition you can read what they have planned for you.

I hope to see you all on the 5^th of March to celebrate the 12,5^th anniversary with us and I hope you enjoy reading the third edition of the pApErclipse.

On august 23rd in 1996 AEclipse was founded. That means it was precisely 12,5 years ago on monday 23rd of February. And that needs to be celebrated. A small committee called Twics started with the preparations a few months ago. And now the party is ready to start! On Thursday 5th of March was the party. Performing was the band Pangea and with DJ Martininio  we partied till dawn.

Business Cycle Tour: New York & Washington

The challenge: find the best location for the Business Cycle Tour! The solution: New York, New York. A city with a name worth repeating again. The financial and trade centre of the world, not to mention its cultural value. And to add to all this: Washington, the political center of the world.

It was the combination of this two destinations that made the BCT 2009 of AEclipse to be a great success. A bombardment of impressions grabbed the 25 lucky participants in the last week of January. The ice-cold wintry New York could not diminish this experience. Whether one looked up to the Statue of Liberty, looked down on a breathtaking panorama of New York from the 69^th floor of the Rockefeller building or stood at the foot of the Lincoln monument in Washington for a photo snap, everything was absorbed by the participants to form an incredible travel experience.

Not in the last place the success of this trip could be contributed to the many different organizations visited and the hospitality they offered. The three course lunch given by the World Bank and the conversation with the ambassador of the Netherlands to the United Nations were also a great accomplishment of the BCT committee.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the trip had to do with ‘feeling the atmosphere’. Experiencing some of the lifestyle of a Wall Street trader or a Washington lobbyist. It was all about grabbing a huge cup of coffee at Starbucks, enjoying a street corner hotdog or ordering a huge burger at an All-American diner. Whether the participants were enjoying the jazz sounds in the historical jazz bar Bluenote or wondering why there are no traffic lights in the Netherlands that can count back time like the ones in Washington, one thing everyone knew for certain, ‘we have to go back again’. And until that time comes the American could yell to us ‘Good bye and God bless’.

Early in the morning the BCT participants had met in Rotterdam to go to the inhouseday at the Dutch ministry of finance. The program for today was as follow: from 9 to 12 we had an interesting presentation about the duties of the Dutch ministry of finance and instructions for the case of the department of bfb and with a group of four people we made a case afterwards about foreign affairs. This we had to present the last part of the inhouseday was a tasty lunch with the employees of the ministry. We can say it was a very successful morning!

On a rainy Thursday morning all the participants had gathered at Rotterdam central station to go on the train to Amsterdam. We were going to visit Optiver. Optiver is a Dutch company which trade in financial derivates. We began the morning with an presentation about what the company does and what kind of work the employees do. After this the group was divided into small groups of three persons and we played a ‘bidding game’. The group with the most profits could win a price. This winning group was the group with André, Wandana and Andjenie. The last part of the day was a social drink with employees of different departments in the company. After this drink we all went back in the rain to catch the train to go home.

On Thursday February 12th the symposium ‘Practice and Policy’ took place at the university. The tone of this afternoon was set by Drs. J. Delfgaauw. In an extended speech the announced stimulus plans of the latest times were discussed.

BMC, a company, which advices governmental institutions, continued the symposium with a presentation. Because BMC is dependent for a large part on expenses of the government, they obviously disagreed with the previous presenter. This leaded directly to an exciting discussion among those who were present. The presentation was about the expertise of BMC in the field of advising and as a final point the BMC crisis-scan was discussed. After a short break, BOFEB carried on with the symposium. BOFEB is an institution which provides a 1 year course after graduation in order to make students ready to work at one of the ministries. They gave a short and informal presentation, in which several themes were discussed. Most of the themes are also important in today’s policy making. After the serious part, the participants had a chance to talk further with BOFEB at Sienna while enjoying some drinks. In the light of our earlier in-house days, this was all in all an educative and very successful Thursday afternoon.
