Students versus Staff – Table Tennis
On Thursday 27 January the Erasmus School of Economics held their breath. The obvious tension was felt throughout the entire H-building: Nervous breakdowns of economics professors in class, pencils slipping out of sweaty students’ hands and hovering above all, the preying feeling on everyone’s mind of the inevitable coming closer. It was once again time for the epic battle of Students versus Staff.
While personnel from the 14th floor quickly changed their professions from bookkeepers into bookmakers to arrange some last minute betting the department of economics was getting ready for yet another heroic showdown. After weeks of trash-talk in the hallways and extensive player evaluations not only a few players’ nerves were on edge. The fixtures showed that this year 23 contestants were playing for honor and glory for their team and maybe even more... Rumors circulated amongst students that Otto promised tenure to those of the staff that would succeed in securing the trophy for the department.
The tournament kicked off and in the first rounds students as well as staff won in about equal numbers. The roster featured double elimination, providing everyone out with a second chance on the title. Quickly it became clear that both camps had prepared well to win the trophy for their team. Amazing rallies were played and despite a rather high level of competitiveness, a good time was had by everyone. Naturally, much scientific research into work incentive and remuneration schemes was undertaken in the economics department in the past, and so it was not surprising that the Staff seemed much more motivated than their younger opponents.
After the first rounds, reaching the quarter-finals, it was obvious that the professors and PhD scholars were not just more motivated but also equipped with the ability to stay cool under all the pressure and the persistent chanting of feverishly shouting supporters. – A quality many students seemed to be lacking in the sweating face of the opponent. Admittedly, the staff also played very well.
In the semi-finals the last men standing were all Staff and the battle was lost for the Students in economics. Although it was hard to admit defeat, the last matches were watched, greatly admired and remembered by everyone. Rallies were long and powerful, balls that seemed long gone were returned and the atmosphere in the gym was not a bit lighter than in an Olympic arena when the final was eventually reached by Martin and Otto. Both players made history in an epic final beyond words. In the end Martin was able to secure a close win and ended the tournament as the well-deserved triumphant champion (see middle picture above).
On behalf of AEclipse I would like to thank all participants for great enthusiasm, sportsmanship and superb matches and hope to see everyone back in the summer for Students versus Staff – Football!
