"The Credit Crisis turned Euro Crisis!
Governments saved the world from a depression by bailing out the troubled banking sector during the credit crunch. The credit boom on its turn was largely the result of irresponsible lax monetary policy, low credit standards and global imbalances in trade and savings. Now that governments hold the back, it seems that some may no longer be able or willing to pay.
In the EURO area the big question is: After socializing bank debt, who will bail out the public debt of the South? Big debates are raging within the ECB between the Northern and Southern governors as to whether the sluices are open to monetize the debt, or whether the intervention is only a technical intervention to restore monetary transmission.
On all these issues Prof. Casper de Vries will give a short lecture, followed by a public debate. This is followed by a short presentation on the programmes offered at Duisenberg school of finance.
13:00 Lunch reception
